Karin was born to Waldemar Gunther and Traute Lilli Quass. Her husband, Steve Hauring, and her parents preceded her in death. Karin is survived by: sons Neil and Alan; sister Cornelia Berlimier (married to Mathew Berlimier deceased); grandchildren Elijah, Sophia, and Ava Karin; many nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Joann.

Karin was born in a refugee camp in Hochdonn Schleswig Holstein, Germany, where her parents had met and married. Her family then settled in Hechingen. An excellent student Karin earned an MBA at the University of Ulm. While there she met Steve, stationed at a US Army base. They married in 1974 and soon moved to the greater Detroit, Michigan area close to Steve’s family, then moved to Fairfield, Iowa in 1983.

Karin’s sons Neil and Alan were her pride and joy and she remained very close to her family in Germany. In addition to her great love for her family, Karin also loved the Fairfield community, creating strong bonds with all who knew her through her numerous civic interests. A pillar of strength and a refined lady; outspoken, yet with grace and a heart of gold.

Volunteering was a real calling for Karin displayed in her involvement in a broad range of local organizations throughout her life including local Friendship Force director, Oktoberfest Committee, McElhinney House Women’s Club member, host of local TV program The Fairfield Home & Garden Journal, member of PEO, ABRA, and Fairfield Country Club board, Fairfield Art Association board, many annual Garden Tours. As a Master Gardener she helped create the Healing Garden at Jefferson County Health Center and joined the Fairfield Beautification Commission working on many projects, and was a founding donor of Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.

Karin loved to open her home to guests, from cultural exchange students to RAGBRI riders and her many friends and associates. Her home was always delightfully appointed with charming seasonal touches inside and out. Her desserts were as beautiful to view as they were delicious to taste, and all presented in an effortless, fun manner.

Karin also made use of her many talents employed at Finishing Touch and The At Home Store, and also worked at USA Global Link and BarclayHedge utilizing her earlier education.

Karin’s knowledge, grace and keen ability to organize and beautify will be dearly missed by our community.
