Arthur "Art" Embree Hutton

Arthur Embree Hutton, 80, passed away Saturday, February 15, at his home with his wife of 37 years at his side.  Arthur had suffered a territorial stroke five and a half years before.  Hospice Compassus of Washington, IA provided initial services in his early convalescence until he no longer met their qualifications for care.  For the past 15 months Every Step Hospice of Mt. Pleasant, IA has provided tender, gentle, loving caring which, along with numerous devoted caregivers over the years, made it possible for Art to live at home. Per his instructions, Art was cremated by Behner Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial services will be held at the Fairfield Elks Lodge, Thursday, February 20, with family members present 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM to greet friends, followed by an Elks Memorial Service and a  formal service with Hospice Spiritual Care Counselor, Gordon Hawkins officiating.  A light lunch will be served after which a private service for family members will be held at the Hutton- McCleary Cemetery, Libertyville, IA. Memorial contributions in Art's honor may be directed to Every Step Hospice or the Elks National Scholarship Fund.

Art was born January 13, 1940 of parents Rindle Egad Hutton and Hattie Maude (Webber) Hutton. He attended schools in Fairfield, Iowa, participating in football and basketball before graduating with the FHS Class of 1958. He jokingly confided after trying out for chorus, his music teacher advised him it would be to his advantage to concentrate on sports rather than any musical endeavors.

Upon graduating high school, Art attended Parsons College where an attractive Parson freshman, Linda Miller, caught his eye.  They married June 16, 1961at Athol, Massachusetts, Linda's home town. Accepting Art's first teaching contract, the young family, which included son, Geoffrey Arthur, moved to Williamsburg, Iowa. Art taught math and coached junior high school football and basketball. While residing in Williamsburg, the couple welcomed Shelli Lynn and Curtis Arthur into their family.

The family returned five years later where Art accepted a teaching assignment at the Fairfield Middle School, teaching mathematics and coaching tennis, basketball, and football. Members of Fairfield United Methodist Church, Linda taught Sunday School classes and worked as an administrative secretary at the Jefferson County Hospital and Art completed his Master’s Degree in Guidance Counseling at Northeast Missouri State University, Kirksville, MO. Art left teaching for a brief period of time to become a Correctional Officer for Southeast Iowa and was elected as a member of the Fairfield Community School Board of Education. His work required a lot of travel as a correctional officer which necessitated, he return to teaching and being at home for his family when Linda was diagnosed with cancer which resulted in her death, September 22, 1976. His last years in education was as a high school Guidance Counselor at FHS, filling that position until his retirement.

Since becoming a member of Fairfield Elks Lodge1192 at the age of 21, Art was always an enthusiastic and active participant. He progressed through the steps to become Exalted Ruler for the year 1992-93. After 30 years of having taught and coached young people, Art retired. April, 1997 he was elected State President of the Iowa Elks and later awarded Iowa State Elk of the Year, 2007-08.

Art and Catherine "Katy" Hendrickson Hummell married July 1, 1982 at her childhood home in Richland, IA. Art and Katy enjoyed many years of traveling together, visiting family and friends. Avid fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs, they were long time season ticket holders of Hawkeye basketball and football games and traveled to several away games, as well. They were delighted to travel to the Chezch Republic and Austria with daughter, Shelli, and husband, David during Art’s retirement.

Art was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda; his parents; sister, Zelma Gaddis and her husband, Don; brother, Raymond; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Barbara and Tony Miller; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jake and Rubye Hendrickson.

Left to share his story are his three children, Geoffrey Arthur (Ann), Kearney, MO; Shelli Lynn Hutton­ Hartig (David), Alexandria, VA; Curtis Arthur (Holly), Centerville, IA; step-children Mary Rankin (Jim Bentson), Sunnyvale, CA; Amy Krier (Gregory), Fairbanks, AK; Rubye Gillespie (Martin), West Branch, IA, Janey Hummell, San Diego, CA; brother, Edward (Myrna), Prescott Valley, AZ; seven grandchildren and their spouses; fourteen step-grandchildren and their spouses; four great grandchildren; and five step­ great grandchildren; sisters-in-law Janet Klein and Lugene Krieger; many cousins; nieces and nephews; and so many wonderful friends. Art will be missed by all who had the privilege to know, work with, and love him. He was a kind, gentle, reserved man of deep faith and had a wonderful sense of humor that abided with until the very end.
