Annabelle Lee Hickenbottom

October 31, 1921 — April 1, 2019

Annabelle Lee Lindquist Hickenbottom passed away peacefully at her home in Champaign, Illinois at 9:40pm on Monday, April 1.  She was 97.

Anne, as she was known, was born October 31, 1921 to the late Gustav Edward and Susannah Lewis Lindquist in Denver Colorado.  She grew up in Denver and graduated from East High in 1939.

During World War II she worked in the Finance Office at Lowry Air Field where she met Staff Sergeant Wade Hickenbottom of Fairfield, Iowa.  The couple married October 24, 1943.

Following the war, her husband returned to his civilian employer, General Motors Acceptance Corporation, and the couple lived in Chicago; Bronxville, New York; London, England; and Upper Montclair, New Jersey, and retired to Sarasota, Florida in 1977. After her husband died in 1996 she moved to Champaign to be near her daughter, Nancy Whitford.

Anne was a lifelong homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Lt. Edward Lindquist, over France, during World War II.

She is survived by her two daughters and their families: Shirley Fitzgerald (James) of Rockwall, Texas, grandson Wade Fitzgerald (Alice) and great-granddaughters Emma and Greta Fitzgerald of Dallas, Texas; Nancy Whitford (David) of Champaign, grandson Lt. Col. Andrew Whitford (Angie) and great-grandsons Jack and Oliver of York, England; grandson Edward Whitford (Kate Tagert) and great-grandchildren Bea and Robert of Alexandria, Virginia.

There will be a graveside service at Evergreen Cemetery on Friday, April 5th at 10:30, Rev. Mary Beth Harbaugh officiating. Behner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
