Alison Kies Wasielewski

September 22, 1951 — May 12, 2021

Alison Kies Wasielewski, age 69, beautiful and joyful resident of Maharishi International University since the 1970s, died peacefully at home on May 12, surrounded by her loving and precious husband, Dan Wasielewski, and family.

Alison was a devoted teacher and practitioner of Transcendental Meditation for decades, serving in numerous roles over the years in Fairfield and traveling internationally working with Dan for the TM organization.

With her characteristic strength, wit and goodness, Alison courageously fought cancer, chemo and radiation treatments throughout all of 2020 and this year, while also dealing with multiple sclerosis for many years. She was Dan’s “Warrior Princess” throughout this demanding treatment regimen.

Born in Austin, TX, on September 22, 1951, Alison is the daughter of Ralph and Gena McCall Kies. After her younger years growing up in Texas, she moved to Las Vegas, NV, and then Carson City, NV, where she graduated from Carson High School in 1969.

Her operatic singing, classical dancing and theatrical talents blossomed there, with her many activities as a popular, vivacious cheerleader, choir member and dancer, as well as excelling in scholastics. She played the lead role in the senior production of Peter Pan.

With a gorgeous mezzo soprano voice, Alison studied and performed in numerous operas and concerts at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music.

Alison and Dan met at MIU and were married in Dan’s hometown of Turner Falls, Massachusetts, on Oct. 6, 1979, and thereafter resided at MIU.

Her roles at MIU ranged from writing and editing in the Publications Department, to working with Dan as Time Zone Administrators  based in Chicago, where Dan managed the famed Blackstone Hotel with Alison assisting. At MIU, she founded and sang with the One in Trio for many celebrations and events.

Alison was preceded in death by Miriam Gena in 1980, her beloved baby daughter with Dan. Alison is survived by her husband Dan; her brother Sean Kies of Carson City, NV; her sister Stacy Kies Endres and husband Jim of Reno, NV; and numerous dear cousins in Texas and North Carolina. Alison’s love, support, humor, intelligence and compassion for all will always be loved and remembered.

On behalf of Alison, Dan and the family extend their deep gratitude to the caregivers and programs supporting them through her medical care and home care: Dr. Nilfar Karimova, Jefferson County Health Center;  Dr. Pashtoon Kasi, medical oncologist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; Dr. Sandeep Laroia, director of Radiology Division at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; and Iowa Home Care, Good Samaritan Hospice; and Meghan, Danny, Jeniece, Deb, Amy, Matt, Terry, Gia, (and many others) ; many caring friends and neighbors; and special thanks to Janet Sussman.
