Oliver Spencer Gohn Jr. age 94 of Fairfield, was called home Sunday, July 19, 2020 at Sunnybrook Living Care Center.
Open visitation will be 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, July 23, 2020 at Behner Funeral Home. Following the visitation, he will be cremated.
Graveside memorial service will be 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2020 at Union Cemetery, Fairfield with Pastor John Kermott officiating. Military honors will be after the graveside service. To get to Union Cemetery you will take Hwy 34 East, turn right on Spruce Avenue, turn left on 220th Street and Union Cemetery will be the left.
A memorial has been established and can be mailed to Myra Williams, 201 South Fulton, Keota, IA 52248.
Oliver was born September 21, 1925, in Fairfield to Oliver Spencer and Myra Agnes (Russell) Gohn Sr. He married Helen Crawford on August 31, 1946 at the Baptist parsonage in Fairfield.
Oliver served in the Navy during WW II and won the Golden Glove Boxer Award. He worked at the Ordnance Plant in Middletown and then became Postmaster at the Emmetsburg, IA Post Office until he retired in 1983. Oliver did wood working and took them to craft shows to sell. He loved being outside watching birds, fishing or deer hunting. Oliver followed the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and any college and NFL football team. He was an umpire for Little League games and sports announcer at Pekin HS.
Oliver will be missed by his wife of 73 years, Helen; two children, Terri Rivera of Greenwood, IN and Randy Gohn of Phoenix, AZ; 8 grandchildren, Jason Degen, Myra Williams, Melissa Curtis, Justin Degen, Marica Degen, Maria Rivera, Jose Rivera, Jesus Rivera; and 14 great grandchildren, Tyler, Gavin, Zoey, Gracie, Myla, Landen, Abigail, Jalyn, Oliver, Lola, Armando, Nora, Myah and Calob.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver Sr. and Myra Gohn; two brothers, Howard and Vernard Gohn; and one sister, Barbara Letts.
