Junior Farrier was born October 13, 1925, to Marion & Tempest Farrier. He passed away November 3, 2018, in Iowa City after a short illness at the age of 93. He was the oldest of 10 children. Junior graduated from Ollie High School in 1944. He was drafted during his senior year. Although he did not get to complete that year, he was granted his diploma. He married his wife, Janet, April 1, 1950. They celebrated their 61st anniversary prior to Janet’s death in 2011.
Junior lived in and around Brighton, Iowa most of his life. He would have loved to farm after growing up on one and did farm for a year or two but ended his working life as a welder at Louden’s in Fairfield.
He and Janet loved to travel. They owned an RV and took some great trips with friends over several years.
Junior was in the Navy from 1944 to 1945. He spent much of that time on the USS Samuel S. Miles Destroyer Escort in the Pacific. He did see some action during WW II when his ship was attacked by a Japanese suicide plane that thankfully missed the ship but dipped its wing and killed a shipmate on board. In later years, he and his wife very much enjoyed attending the “Miles Reunions”. Many shipmates became dear friends. It was a passion for him to attend the yearly reunions. His last reunion was in 2017 in Branson, Missouri. He also enjoyed flying to Washington, DC on an “Honor Flight” to see the WW II Memorial.
Junior is survived by his children, John (Ninette) Farrier, Sue (Rick) Tierney, Julie (Matt) Baughman, Linda (Dan) Krug; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 5 sisters, Betty Fahy, Rennie Wakeland, Wanda (Charlie) Lowe, Joan Norton and Kay (Dick) Pohren; one brother, Harold (Kay) Farrier; and one brother-in-law, Frank (Phyllis) Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Janet; son, Robert Marion; and 3 brothers, Gerald, Leo and Lester.
Junior’s family would like to thank staff at the Oaks Assisted Living for caring and supporting Dad while he was living there. A huge thank you to Michael Schleicher for the excellent care he gave Dad.
