John Marvin Hammes, age 84, passed away at 4:20 a.m. Friday, July 22, 2011 at his home in Fairfield.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fairfield, IA with Father Bernard Weir officiating.Burial with miltary rites at Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday, July 25, 2011 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Rosary at 6:30 p.m. by Knights of Columbus and Christian Wake at 7:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be made to Masses, Hospice of Central Iowa, and St. Mary's Catholic Church.
John Marvin was born on July 11, 1927 in Sigourney, Iowa to Michael A. and Cecelia Striegel Hammes. He married A. Ruth Conrad on January 27, 1953 in Keota, Iowa.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a life long farmer. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and belonged to the American Legion Post #47, Fairfield, Iowa.
John Marvin is survived by his wife: Ruth, 7 children: Gary (Betty) of North Pole, Alaska; Jerome (Linda) of Pomona, Kansas; Bill (Cyndi) of Wilton, Iowa; Terry (Diana) of Standard, Illinois; Diane (Phil) Tone of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Tony of Fairfield and Ron (Cindy) of Fairfield; 22 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 5 siblings: Elizabeth Conrad, Beatrice Clubb, Cletus Hammes, and Donna Paarman all of Sigourney, Iowa and Kenneth Hammes of Solon, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Tommy; one grandson Austen Tone; 4 sisters--Leola Heisdorffer, Agatha Conrad, Dolores Baker, Eveleen Ulin and two brothers--Edwin Hammes and Laurence (Bud) Hammes.
