Herbert Kelland Redhead age 91, known as Kell, passed away on Apri 4, 2015. He was born in New York State on January 9, 1924 to Mildred Crowe and Herbert Henry Redhead. He resided in Des Moines, Iowa in the Redhead Mansion an historic landmark. His Great grandfather Wesley Redhead, known as Iowa’s Coal King, donated the land for the Iowa State Fair Grounds. Herbert graduated from East High School in 1943. After high school he worked for Allis Chalmers Corporation.
Herbert married Burretta Mae Goodman in 1944 in Des Moines. They were married for 52 years. In 1956 the couple bought the Mason House Inn in Bentonsport, Iowa. The old hotel and original contents had been in the same family for 99 years. Herbert and his wife restored the Inn and numerous buildings and were instrumental in getting the town on the National Historic Register.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents and wife.
Herbert is survived by his two daughters Kell Ann Redhead of Keokuk, Iowa and Sally Ross of Roach, Missouri; his brother Wesley Redhead and his sister Joy Gilchrist both of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request memorial donations be made to the Bentonsport Improvement Association.
