Eloise Annie Rogers

Eloise A. Rogers, age 90, of Fairfield, IA, passed away Monday, February 2, 2009 at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 9:00 AM, Friday, February 6, 2009. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 AM, at the funeral home, with Rev. Harlan VanVoorst officiating. Interment will be in the Switzer family cemetery, NE of Fairfield.

Eloise Annie Rogers was born September 1, 1918 in rural Fairfield to Clarence and Annie (Duncan) Switzer. She grew up in Fairfield and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1935, where she participated in the Glee Club. Eloise attended the Fairfield Methodist Church and sang in the choir. Following high school, she taught in one-room schools in Jefferson and Henry counties from 1937-1939.

Eloise was united in marriage with Eldon Rogers on September 9, 1939 at her parent's home. They lived on a farm near Richland until moving to Tucson, AZ in 1953 for Eldon's health. While in Arizona, she worked first as a waitress, then as a retail clerk for 25 years. She was active in the Mariposa Chapter 31 Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron in 1973. She was also a member of the Saharo #2 Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.

Following retirement she and Eldon returned to Batavia, IA to be near family. Eloise was active in the Past Matron Club, Retired Teacher Association, and enjoyed gardening, embroidery and cooking. In May of 2008, Eloise moved to Sunnybrook Assisted Living, and then to the Living Care Center at Jefferson County Hospital in November. Eldon passed away October 22, 1994. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Frank and Warren, sister Helen Hird, several nieces and nephews and special friend, Dale Miller.

Survivors include sister Doris Stukenberg of Ames, IA and several nieces and nephews.
