Obituary

Dennis Lee Kiger, 76, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Fairfield, passed away Wednesday, December 24, 2025 at VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines.

A memorial service celebrating his life will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2025 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield.

Dennis was born November 11, 1949 in Fairfield, the son of Carl B. and Wilma J. (Hudson) Kiger. After graduating from Fairfield High School, he entered the United States Army and served from 1967-1971 during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. While serving during the war, he received the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and an air medal. After discharge from active duty, Dennis continued his service in the Iowa National Guard until 1982. He continued to parachute until 1985 and kept a log of all of his jumps; the last jump at the Perry Airport.

In 1971, Dennis began attending at Parsons College in Fairfield until its closure. He then went on to Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. After graduation he moved to the Des Moines area and began working for Younkers. He later began working for Garst Seed Company where he retired after 20 years of service.

Above all else, Dennis was a devoted father. He loved his children fiercely and showed that love through his constant presence, quiet sacrifices, and unwavering support. He believed in them deeply, encouraged their dreams, and stood beside them through every season of life. Beside his military service, his children were his greatest pride, and the care he gave them shaped who they are today.

He carried a profound and lasting love for his grandson, Kristopher, whose life ended far too soon. Even in his final months in memory care, Kristopher remained close to his heart. Dennis spoke of him often and longed to hear from him, a reflection of a love so strong it transcended time, memory, and loss.

He loved his dogs and considered them family. Though they passed away before him, his devotion never wavered, and he made certain their care was provided for. His love for dogs was a lasting gift he shared with his children.

Those left to honor his memory include his children, Melissa (Tim) Kiger-Bell of Riverside, Iowa, and Kris (Stephanie) Kiger of Ankeny, Iowa; step-grandchildren, Liam (Sarah) Bell of Onawa, Iowa and Jack Bell of Ankeny.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Kristopher Lee Kiger; and brother, Dean Kiger.

Dennis’ family would like to thank the Carroll County and Polk County VA. He also deeply enjoyed the friendship of his neighbors, Kelly and Mandy, whose kindness and care meant so much to him and to his family. They were always there when he needed them, and as his children, we took great comfort in knowing they were watching over him with such genuine care.
