David M. Grimm

August 7, 1944 — February 7, 2025

Fairfield

David Merle Grimm, 80, a resident of Fairfield, passed away February 7, 2025.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal service. Memorials may be made to Noah’s Ark Animal Foundation and mailed to the family at 4115 Olde Coach Rd. Durham, NC 27707. Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield is assisting the family.

Born August 7, 1944 in Iowa City, Iowa, David attended Cardinal High School in Eldon, Iowa, where he played football for the Cardinal Comets. He lived life on his own terms and was known for his sarcastic wit and strong will. David dedicated 32 years to the railroad industry and was proud to be a descendant of a multi-generational Rock Island Railroad family. He valued his independence, and although he was strong-willed, those who knew him best appreciated the honesty and depth of his character.

He enjoyed riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles, having built several from the frame up, including multiple rebuilds of his beloved 1972 Shovelhead over the decades. He loved wearing stylish hats and fashionable clothing while cruising around town. His final wish was to have his ashes scattered, along with those of his late wife, on Jones Mountain in Colorado.

Though estranged from his children, those who knew him well saw the deep regret he carried in his heart. He is survived by his children, Todd Grimm of Raymore, Missouri and Traci Grimm of Moline, Illinois; his brother, Jerry Grimm of Indianola, Iowa; and his nephews, Doug Grimm of Durham, North Carolina, Timm Grimm of West Des Moines, Iowa, Kevin Grimm of Iowa City, Charlie Grimm of Washington, along with his nieces, Kim Dicky of Atalissa, Iowa, and Laura Southern of Fort Collins, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Grimm; parents, Charles Samuel and Beatrice Perle (Prince) Grimm; and brothers, Charles Jr., Grant, and Donny Grimm.
