Carol Jean Hayes

May 18, 1939 — December 27, 2017

Carol Jean Hayes, 78, of 2056 Vetch Blvd, Lockridge, while surrounded by family, went to be with Jesus on December 27th, 2017 at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield. She was born on May 18th, 1939 in Fairfield, the youngest child of Earl A. and Margaret Matilda (Cunningham) Hall. She grew up south of Fairfield on a farm near Birmingham and attended Fairfield High School. She lived in or near Fairfield most of her life.

Carol married her high school sweetheart Bob Hayes February 22, 1957 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. These two had such an amazing relationship that they not only created a wonderful family but also worked side by side for most of their life together. Their working endeavors included Jefco Fertilizer, Hayes Auction Service, Century 21 Hayes Realty, and then they operated Hayes Appraisal Services until retirement. Carol attended church with Bob at Friends Church and Faith Christian Outreach Church for nearly six decades. In the 70’s while at the Friends Church Carol and Bob started a youth program called Puppets Limited which traveled Eastern Iowa and southern Minnesota to put on programs for churches, orphanages, and youth groups.

Carol’s love for Jesus and her family was evident to all. She was a servant to all she knew and had a special place in her heart for the elderly of her church families and community. Carol loved to bake and deliver goodies to many and was well known for her homemade bread, chicken and noodles, pies, and fudge. Her kindness impacted dozens of women as a gentle reminder that they were loved. Carol’s tender heart encouraged and inspired not only her family, but also many of those that she encountered over the years.

Carol is survived by her husband, Bob of Lockridge, her son Terry (Sallie) of Fairfield and her daughters Christy (Dave) Watts of Washington and Bobbi (Doug) Smith of Rogersville, MO along with her grandchildren: Austin (Stacey) Martin of Fairfield, Jennifer (Matt) Clendineng of Coralville, Amy Watts of Fargo, ND, Alison (Steve) Libe of Washington, Derek Hayes of Fairfield, and Kirsten (Matt) Harken of Waterloo. She is also survived by six great grandchildren and her sister Ann Speer of Boulder, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Bob, Dick, Jim, Ben and Jerry, and sisters Elizabeth and Mary.

The memorial service will be Tuesday, January 2nd at 10:30am at the Fairfield Friends Church at 1209 S 6th, Fairfield, with Rev. Alan Mullikin officiating, followed by a luncheon. Burial will be at a later date at Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham. Cards and memorials are welcome at the Memorial Service Tuesday, or they may be sent to 2056 Vetch Blvd, Lockridge, IA 52635.
