Allan "Al" Derry Wilcox, 72, passed away December 27, 2018, at his home in Packwood, IA.
He was born February 28, 1946, in Manhattan, NY and graduated from Walt Whitman High School of Huntington Station, Long Island in 1964. He then attended Parsons College in Fairfield, IA. He enlisted in the US Army and served in the Vietnam War from 1968 until 1970 (2nd Battalion 35th Infantry). He later served 26 years with the Iowa National Guard 224th Engineer Battalion based in Fairfield including overseas deployment during Operation Desert Storm. He was also employed with McCleery-Cummings in Washington, IA for over 30 years.
Al married Dorothy Irving on September 25, 1973, in Cedar Falls, IA. They moved to Packwood in 1975 where they raised 3 sons, Tony (Angela) of North Liberty, IA, Joe (Shelby) of Iowa City, IA and Dan (Heather) of Pella, IA. Al thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Al was a member of Elks, VFW and American Legion in Fairfield. He liked all sports and followed all New York teams. Some of Al’s other interests were reading, playing cards (bridge), and doing crossword puzzles. He also had a love for animals, especially his family's pets.
Al was preceded in death by his father, Allan Dudley and mother Marjorie (Knox).
He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, brother, Peter (Jolene) of Garland, TX and 10 grandchildren.
He has been cremated and a Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, March 2, 2019 at the Packwood Community Building . Family will be present from 1:00pm to 2:00pm for an open house and a sharing service will begin at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers or gifts please make donations to a charity of donor’s choice. Cards and memorials may be mailed to 325 North Main Street, Packwood, IA 52580.
